Once you have figured out where you wish to put your office in you home, you now need to start planning where all your new furniture and equipment is going to go. But while you are working that out you need to start finding things to put in your new office. Remember no two offices are the same. Part of the beauty of having an office at home is the ability to personalise it and get it just how you want it. With your office at work you are often limited to making it feel like home.

The key thing for me is a good quality desk and chair, they are not just important they are essential. We often have a strange attitude when it comes to work equipment, as a rule we spend more time in the office than we do at home with our loved ones, now at work we cant buy nice quality chairs and desks, we have what we are given. At home though you have this choice. Do not be tight and buy the cheapest furniture you can find, I bet you spend lots on your seating in the living room. Many people spend thousands of dollars on their three piece suite, while they buy a basic desk and chair from Walmart for a hundred dollars to sit on from nine to five. Remember you will be sitting on your office chair for at least eight hours a day and only two to three hours a day on the sofa.

Your new desk needs to be big enough to house your computer, keyboard, mouse, printer and any other desktop items such as stationary. Ideally as well it should have a lowered tray for the keyboard. The chair is even more important than the desk; a bad chair will give encourage bad posture, and lead to conditions such as RSI. The chair that you choose should be adjustable in height and support your back. Try several out to see if they suit you before you buy.

I always promote a paperless office personally, but try as you might you still need somewhere to store documents. If you are up against it with regards to space then you could go for a small set of drawers rather than a traditional filing cabinet. By spending a sensible amount on these three essential items for your home office you should have a comfortable area to conduct your business in many years to come.
