Even if you’re on a tight budget and not able to replace all of your computer peripherals and accessories with ergonomic models, it’s good to have an understanding of computer ergonomics, as this will at least give you an awareness of the things you can do with what you already have in order to make your computer use more ergonomic and therefore much healthier in the long term.
What is computer ergonomics?
In practical terms, computer ergonomics is the degree to which your computer use, whether at work or at home, can be conducted in such a way as to prevent the occurrence of undue physical discomfort or fatigue. This involves not only having the right accessories, but also an ergonomic workstation layout, and understanding ergonomic computer use habits such as taking hourly breaks and stretching as much as is necessary to continue to operate without discomfort.
Why does computer ergonomics matter?
As people around the world spend more time using computers, computer ergonomics in general will only continue to become a more important issue. Essentially, our health as a global society will depend on our ability to use computers and other technology in a healthy way. If we fail to do this, and continue instead to use computers in an unergonomic way, the health of the population at large will suffer, and we’ll all be worse off for it.
